The San Diego Chargers need to improve their third down defense - Rant Sports

The San Diego Chargers had many problems on defense last season.  San Diego was tied for 23rd in team sacks with 32, they ranked 20th against the run and although they ranked 13th against the pass, only two teams faced fewer pass attempts while only five teams allowed a higher quarterback rating.  Another major issue that San Diego needs to improve on heading into the 2012 NFL season is their third down defense.  San Diego allowed opponents to convert a league high 49 percent of their third downs.

San Diego made moves in the off-season to improve most of these weaknesses.  Melvin Ingram was selected in round one of the 2012 NFL Draft.  Ingram had 10 sacks in 13 games last season at South Carolina and nine sacks in 12 games during his 2010 season.  Veteran outside linebacker Jarret Johnson was added to the team as was veteran strong safety Atari Bigby which should help against the run. Defensive end Kendall Reyes was selected in round two of the draft and strong safety Brandon Taylor was chosen in round three.  A healthy Shaun Phillips will go a long way in improving on defense as well.

San Diego made it a priority to improve on defense during the off-season.  The addition of pass rushers, a veteran OLB and a veteran SS as well as another SS should help them be a better team on third downs.  Quentin Jammer went through a divorce last season, which had to be a major impediment to his play on the field.  I expect Jammer to have a better season and Antoine Cason has to improve as well for the Chargers to be better on third downs and better as a whole on defense.
